The Project

University of the Nations Urban Campus – De Poort

We are now in the process of expanding into new facilities for the University of the Nations campus here and are in need of energetic men and women of God who are willing to get their hands dirty in order prepare the campus for students. We will have students coming from all around the world to live and learn about God in our urban campus in the city center. We need people who can paint and clean and who don’t mind doing a little hard work. We also have a need for plumbers, electricians, masons and carpenters. If we were to have a group of 10 able bodies a lot of work could be done in a few weeks.

The Lighthouse and the Tabernacle of the Nations Scaffolding Work

The Lighthouse and the Tabernacle of the Nations are YWAM Amsterdam ministries located side by side in the Red Light District. The Tabernacle of the Nations is a prayer house for the nations and the Lighthouse is a ministry focused on raising awareness about the sex trade and prostitution. They are also working and ministering to the ladies who are working behind the windows.

These are very old buildings from the 1600’s and in need of some attention on the outside. We need people who are not afraid of heights who are willing to work on the scaffolding outside scraping and painting the front of the building.

For the Tabernacle of the Nations, we also need someone who is skilled in carpentry, more specifically to make stairs to the rooftop and to put new outside doors in the basement. Also someone with electrical skills to put up fire alarms, and someone for brick laying outside the front door.

History

YWAM Amsterdam has been in the city for 37 years and has a rich history of reaching out to the city. The base started with the Ark: a boat parked behind Central Station that began as on outreach to the homeless, the bikers, the lost and the broken, which later transitioned into The Cleft and now has become the Lighthouse. We have another building called De Poort, which is our training center and housing for staff and volunteers and mission builders. In front of Central Station is the Samaritan’s Inn, which has been home to various youth ministries reaching out in the city in the clubs, universities and through creative street evangelism.

Area Culture and General Information

All of our buildings are in the center of Amsterdam so it makes it very convenient to get around. Public transit is excellent and easily available. The Tabernacle of the Nations and the Lighthouse are located in the center of the Red Light District, so if you have a history of drug or sex addiction it would not be advisable to work in this area as it is all readily available and could easily become a stumbling block.

Accommodations

De Poort, originally a sea farers hotel, has a history of people coming and going from the nations. You would have a private room with shared toilets, showers and kitchen. Laundry facilities are on each floor. An elevator is also available. Wireless for laptops and computers are available on the main floor for the community.

Travel Information

You would arrive at Schiphol Airport which is a 20 minute train ride away; there are trains leaving every 10 minutes to Central Station, only a 10 minute walk from De Poort.

Food and Beverage Information

A hot meal is generally served in the dining room in the evening with a pack lunch (or if you are working in De Poort, lunch may also be served in the dining room). Breakfast is open in the morning usually from 7:00-7:30 also in the dining room. There are also several grocery stores close by if there are additional things you need.

Recreation Information

Amsterdam is a beautiful city with much to offer. Many museums, churches, canal cruises, markets, and shopping. Bring good shoes because Amsterdam is a great place to walk and explore the beauty of the old city.
